Sugarcane Root Growth and Relationships to Above-ground Biomass

چکیده
Roots comprise the lesselknown part of the soil-plantatmosphere continuum and yet are essential to the supply of sufficient water and nutrients to ensure u successt'ul crop. By understanding the growth and distribution of sugarcane roots. yields can be optiniiscd through improved strategic decisions. 'This paper addresses root growth and rclationships to above ground biomass. lssues discussed include the descending ratc, distribution with dcpth and total length 01' roots, the effect of water availability, and the I-clationship between roots, total leaf nurnber and grccn leaf' area. The relationship bctween roots and total leaf number has never been published before and this papcr ol'l'ers a possible explnnation folthe change in the sate of green leaf appeal-ancc over time. All growth trends have been expressed in relation to cumulative heat units (base tcmperaturc = 10°C) which makes it possible to link data from difkrent seasons and different parts of the world.

Effects of drought and recovery from drought stress on above ground and root growth, and water use efficiency in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.)
Physiological traits associated with drought tolerance are useful as surrogate traits for drought tolerance. Information on the association of root traits and water use efficiency (WUE) and plant growth in sugarcane is rather limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate genotypic variation for root traits, WUE and growth characters of above ground parts of sugarcane. A 2 × 10 factorial ...
متن کاملPotential of Landsat-8 spectral indices to estimate forest biomass
Forest ecosystems are among the largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs on our planet earth thus playing a vital role in global carbon cycle. Presently, remote sensing techniques provide proper estimates of forest biomass and quantify carbon stocks. The present study has explored Landsat-8 sensor product and evaluated its application in biomass mapping and estimation. The specific objectives were...
متن کاملAllometric scaling relationship between above- and below-ground biomass within and across five woody seedlings
Allometric biomass allocation theory predicts that leaf biomass (M L ) scaled isometrically with stem (M S ) and root (M R ) biomass, and thus above-ground biomass (leaf and stem) (M A ) and root (M R ) scaled nearly isometrically with below-ground biomass (root) for tree seedlings across a wide diversity of taxa. Furthermore, prior studies also imply that scaling constant should vary with spec...

Aboveground biomass (AGB) of forests is an essential component of the global carbon cycle. Mapping above-ground biomass is important for estimating CO2 emissions, and planning and monitoring of forests and ecosystem productivity. Remote sensing provides wide observations to monitor forest coverage, the Landsat 8 mission provides valuable opportunities for quantifying the distribution of above-g...
متن کاملArbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alter plant allometry and biomass-density relationships.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Plant biomass-density relationships during self-thinning are determined mainly by allometry. Both allometry and biomass-density relationship have been shown to vary with abiotic conditions, but the effects of biotic interactions have not been investigated. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can promote plant growth and affect plant form. Here experiments were carried out to ...
